WP 3.0 Upgrade 404 Error Fix When Categories Not Showing

Suddenly None Of My Categories Were Showing

I recently upgraded this site from WordPress 2.92 to version 3.0. To my horror whenever the a category was clicked on in the menu the dreaded 404 Error appeared.  It occurred to me that permalink structure might be the problem so I took the following steps which cured the problem for me at any rate. This fix would be a pain if you had loads of posts but it does work.

The Fix

  1. First of all I visited Settings >>Permalinks from the admin panel and made sure that the custom structure was /%postname%/
  2. I then went to Posts >> Categories and deleted all leaving the general category as the only category assigned to every post
  3. I then created all the categories again and assigned each post back to its preferred category
