Am I speaking with Mr John Tribe ?

The phone rings you answer it there is a delay of maybe 5 secs and then the first thing the person at the other end of the phone says is .. Am I speaking with followed by your name.  Usually this question is followed by a lenghty sales pitch without the the speaker stopping to draw a breath.

Well I welcome any comments but I think it is rude. Ringing anyone should be likened to knocking on their front door. You don’t or shouldn’t knock on someones’ door and say are you so and so . You should start with announcing who you are and where you are from.

Vote and tell me whether or not you believe it is rude to say ‘Am I speaking with?’ before saying anything else.
