WP 3.0 Upgrade 404 Error Fix When Categories Not Showing

I recently upgraded this site from WordPress 2.92 to version 3.0. To my horror whenever the a category was clicked on in the menu the dreaded 404 Error appeared. It occurred to me that permalink structure might be the problem so I took the following steps which cured the problem for me at any rate. This fix would be a pain if you had loads of posts but it does work.
Website Design is Unimportant

Not before time many people are realizing just how effectively the web can serve them. In 1998 when I started developing websites the emphasis was on design and whilst the rules of a good design still hold true (A good design is not noticed by the on looker, a bad design stares out), today a website has become a frontline showroom, a back office and is interactive with one’s audience.

In 12 years I have seen plenty of technolgies, ideas and tools on the web which never made it. Always look at reviews of systems before going with anything. Open Source is usually very good stuff.

When you go to build a website you need professionaly taken pictures. Sure you can find anything on Google but nothing beats the impact of a well taken photograph. Web developers can invariably do well to find a good photographer in their area. It also helps with finding extra clients as like everything we can only multi task to a degree before we run out of human bandwidth. Most photographers are very happy to reciprocate clients.

The phone rings you answer it there is a delay of maybe 5 secs and then the first thing the person at the other end of the phone says is .. Am I speaking with followed by your name. Usually this question is followed by a lenghty sales pitch without the the speaker stopping to draw a breath.

Published December 11, 2009 | Let’s face it many of us can remember the first IBM PC showroom in Victoria Street London back in spring 1983. When being shown the available software by the salesman all appeared to be quite fast on the black screen with green text, until some printing was required. The salesman would say “Of course this is where you go and make a coffee while it prints”. Well 26 years down the road and we all still wait for computers. I particularly like Eddie Izzard’s take on computers updating, which seems to be the new computer event for making a cup of coffee.
